Computer Performance Guide

KBS6 - My computer is very slow! What can I do?

The sources of slow performance listed below are not necessarily the only possible problems. However, they are the most common problems that our department runs into on a daily basis. Other issues such as overheating and other hardware related problems require a technician to clean and inspect your computer.

  • Defragment the hard drive
    • Click Start
    • Select Run
    • Open: dfrg.msc
    • Click OK . A "Disk Defragmenter" window should appear.

    • Select your Primary hard drive. Usually this is your C drive
    • Click the Defragment button
    • Defragmentation may take a considerable amount of time. Please be patient and allow the defragmentation or defrag to complete.
  • Delete Unnecessary Files
    • Click on Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup
    • Selct the C:\ Drive
    • Disk Cleanup will scan the hard drive for files

    • After the scan is complete, a list of cleanup areas is available. Please select the files that you want to remove. A description of the files that will be removed is available under Description when you select an area.
    • CAUTION: Once you complete this wizard, the areas selected will be permanently removed.

    • Select the areas to be cleaned and click on OK
    • Click on Yes to confirm to proceed

    • After selecting Yes, a status window will appear

    • After Disk Cleanup has been completed, the utility will exit. No confirmation will appear to confirm a successful cleanup
    • An error message will appear if there was a problem

  • Scan for Viruses
    • Your computer should have real-time protection.
    • To perform a manual scan, open My Computer
    • Right click on the C drive
    • Select Scan for Viruses...

    • A virus scan should automatically start on the selected drive. Please be patient. This step may take a significant amount of time. Please report all malware (viruses, trojans, worms, etc) to your technology specialist (Contact Support).
  • Check Disk
    • Click on Start > Run...
    • In the Open text box, please type the following:
      • chkdsk c: /f
    • If a message stating that this step cannot be completed at this time, please answer yes or Y when you are asked to schedule a check disk during the next reboot.
  • Windows Updates
  • Spyware
    • If the above steps did not resolve the performance issues, your computer may be infected with a type of malware know as spyware.
    • Please contact your technology specialist (Contact Support).
