The Bolivar School District is adding a third school resource officer, Mike Smith. Smith, who brings a wealth of experience in law enforcement and school safety, will join the district's efforts to ensure a safe and secure learning environment for all students, staff, and visitors.
Having previously served as a school resource officer at Bolivar Schools for four years, Smith is already familiar with the district's culture and safety protocols. Smith's return to Bolivar Schools marks a significant enhancement to the district's safety measures.
“Our number one priority is safety and security,” said Superintendent Dr. Richard Asbill. “We are excited to have Mike Smith back with us and leading our safety, security, and SRO efforts. Mike brings great experience and expertise, and we knew he was the right person to lead our security and safety efforts. Mike knows our school district, our teachers, and stakeholders and will help our administrative team keep our safety goals as our top priority.”
Smith will hold the position of Safety and Security Coordinator, as well as School Resource Officer. As Safety and Security Coordinator, Smith will work with faculty and staff to develop, prepare, and implement safety and security programs to ensure a safe school environment. He will also facilitate safety training for faculty and staff.
“I am looking forward to returning to my old family,” said Smith. “The district has been hard at work improving the safety and security of our school buildings, and I look forward to working with staff to continue making our schools as safe as they can be.”
For the past two years, Smith has been serving in the Work Health/Safety department at Citizens Memorial Hospital, where he managed the workplace violence prevention program and trained all staff on de-escalation, active shooter response, and a variety of training in areas of safety.
Prior to his tenure at Bolivar Schools and Citizens Memorial Hospital, Smith was a dedicated police officer for 22 years, including five years as an SRO at the Rockwood School District. His extensive background in law enforcement equips him with a deep understanding of safety procedures and a proactive approach to maintaining a secure environment.
Smith began at the Bolivar School District on March 1, 2024.
