The FEMA gym sits on the campus of Bolivar Middle School at 604 W. Jackson Street. It provides space for our BMS physical education, a home for our wrestling program, and a safe haven for our students and staff during severe weather.
Outside of school hours (6:00 AM to 4:00 PM), when a tornado warning is activated, the general public can seek shelter at the Community Safe Room until the weather passes. Pets are not allowed in the Community Safe Room unless they are documented, medically recognized service animals.
The Bolivar School Board applied for the FEMA grant in 2019 and was the only school district awarded a grant that year. The total facility cost was $3.3 million, with construction of the 8,650 square-foot facility beginning with a groundbreaking on February 16, 2023. A ribbon-cutting for the facility was held on October 30, 2023.
